《呻吟語》一書立足儒學，積極用世，內容關乎求治平，處事應物，言簡意賅，洞澈精微，影響很大。
明代才子、著名文學家申涵光稱此書：「不可不常看。」清代名儒尹會一評論此書：「推堪人情物理，研辨內外公私，痛切之至，令人當下猛省，奚啻砭骨神針，苦口之良劑」。
日本著名的經營之神稻盛和夫深受此書影響，直言本書為其修煉自己與管理企業的四本書之一。（其餘三本為《了凡四訓》《陰鷙文》《菜根譚》。）
